Week 13

Tagging, Folksonomies and Social bookmarking. I'm learning there is alot out there in the computer world that I will never discover and probably never require the patience to shift through, but I can see that information and visual effects are all just sitting there waiting to be harnessed if I decide to join the race. Out with the old ways, In with the new

I have been in Libraries since the 1980's and have travelled the systems of cards to barcodes. Not only have Libraries changed with the introduction of technologies but also the services that Users expect to find in a public library have increased immensely. Once a Users would wonder in to their public library just to sit and read the daily paper or to catch up on writing letters to overseas friends and family, those users now wonder in to read papers on-line or correspond with friend and family overseas by email. A sea of Reference study carrels, students with heads bent over piles of reference books, sifting and sorting for that answer they should know, the image is now replaced by a screen flashing information, the students eyes transfixed, printers and memory sticks blinking red or green and speed the essence. Silence signs are thankfully replaced with peaceful in-house music, vibrant storytimes, poetry readings and training classes for our users. I wait for the day when technology delivers, a new streamlined book shelving device.
